You have: All the tools. You need: Project Management

Feb 17, 2011

In business, just like in many other areas of life, there are people that have the knowledge and skills for a job and people that do not. Everyone would like to believe that given all the right tools and advice for a job, they could do it themselves. It’s a pipe dream that people cling to when they make excuses for not getting an important task done (or not getting it done right).

Too many small business owners and the like have fallen into this trap. They figured, since they can run a business, they can build a website- well it is simply not true. The issue here is not so much false confidence as it is an underestimation of the work involved. Building a professional website for your company is a painstaking, highly detailed process. That’s why there are people who spend their entire careers perfecting the art.

Face it, anyone can go to a store with a list of the tools and resources that are needed to complete a project. Of course, once you have everything you need, then what? Where do you start? How do you start? Visiting Sears, Home Depot and Lowes to purchase all the materials for building a house is one thing. Having the experience, skill and general understanding of how those materials must be molded in order to create a house, is quite another.

This is why there are so many bad websites on the web. It is also why many business owners do not seek help with their web design from professionals. They convince themselves it’s a task they can accomplish alone because they think they have an idea of what’s involved.

The truth is that the only people who can do a professional job for a specific task are the very same people that have trained themselves for most of their lives to do so. If you are in the business of making bricks, and that is all you know, what leads you to believe you can make a website that will stand up to professional scrutiny?

If you can get all the pieces to the puzzle, that is great. But if you don’t know how they fit together, then find someone who does and can help you. Otherwise, you’ll end up messing it up and having to start all over again.
