Google Instant: Here to Stay

Thursday, April 28th, 2011 at 11:46 pm by Jennifer

Maybe you’ve noticed and maybe you haven’t, but the option to turn off Google Instant, next to the ‘Search’ button on your Google results page, is no longer available. I guess the feature is now a permanent fixture for users.

This is great news for those of you who use it and think it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. For the rest of us, that find it annoying, it’s just another kick in the butt. (more…)

Importance of Payment Gateway Security for a Small Business

Thursday, April 21st, 2011 at 8:13 pm by Jennifer

Since security is still the number one topic of discussion for online matters in 2011, I thought we would continue the theme for this post. If you have serious concerns about your website’s security, contact the professionals at DCW right away.

Did you know there is a Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS)? If you run a small business online or plan to, then you better know about it! It is what makes transactions on your website, with a card payment, legal. The guidelines have another goal though: to make your website’s payment method secure. Too many small business websites are at great risk of being hacked and their customers’ secure information taken. (more…)

In this age of instant gratification, slow page loads are like torture. From little kids to aging adults, no one likes to sit around for a web page to load. Talk about directly affecting the bottom line! Having a speedy website is definitely a sound investment. (more…)

Ignoring Social Media could Prove Fatal for Your Business

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011 at 7:33 pm by Jennifer

The two highest conversion tools for e-commerce are social media and long-tail keywords. If you are a business, there is no doubt that you need to have a presence in social media to connect with customers. Failing to do this will just make it that much easier for your competitors to steal more customers from you because, trust me, they are involved in social media. (more…)

Long-tail Keywords lead to more Conversions

Friday, April 15th, 2011 at 12:43 pm by Jennifer

For most websites, when the keywords are first chosen, they are often high search volume, head keywords targeted. The market for such keywords is a tough one, oversaturated with every Tom, Dick and Harry trying to rank for it in search engines. This stiff competition, as all adversity does, lead to a discovery in the power of long-tail keywords, which seemed to be ranking easier and converting better. From 2005 – 2009, the focus on head keywords shifted for most experienced SEO professionals, most notably in Chris Anderson’s book: “The Long Tail: Why the future of business is selling less for more”. They encouraged clients and friends to focus on long-tail keywords. Then, this past September was filled with high expectations for Google Instant and the likely death of the long-tail keyword. Mobile Market Domination by Android

Thursday, April 7th, 2011 at 3:20 pm by Jennifer

Sit down everyone. It is time to begin Mobile Market Domination 201 (not just for beginner’s anymore).

The Android has been on the rise since its introduction into the mobile market. With all the competition in the industry, it’s easy for things to change dramatically at a moment’s notice. Fortunately, Google’s Android software, and the quality phones running it, is making a powerful push to be and stay number one- and it’s working.

Let me tell you why Android is number one now and will be for the foreseeable future:

  1. Windows 7 phone is hardly Impressive – The software giant has a good phone, but not a great one. It lacks a large selection of apps, which is very important to users now-a-days. Its OS is lacking many features that the Android OS already offers. While it is competing with the Android in wooing vendors to produce apps for its OS, it still needs to come up with something better to challenge the Android.

Security Continues to be a Major Issue in 2011

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011 at 10:28 pm by Jennifer

If there is one thing that can never be stressed enough, it is security for your customers’ personal information. So far, 2011 has been rife with security threats and quick fixes.

Now, I know what you’re thinking- and yes, it has been mostly large companies that are being targeted by hackers. However, practicing competent security measures now will be infinitely useful to you and your company as it grows in the future. Hiring professional web developers to handle your security needs is not just smart, it’s necessary.

No one wants to be the newest victim of a security violation. For any business, it is a nightmare scenario. You are probably still getting emails from any number of services you subscribe to about your email being on a list of thousands that was stolen hacked from Epsilon. Even though the company swears up and down that the breach was not that severe, people remain worried. Security breaches lead to a lot of bad press for your company, inconveniences for your customers (at the least) and web security development overhauls for your business. (more…)

Are Passwords Becoming Extinct?

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011 at 3:14 am by Jennifer

Passwords are certainly troublesome lately. Talk to any computer, programming or web design guru and they will certainly disagree:

“All you have to do is make a password that is not based on a word, has a few numbers and symbols.”

Oh sure, right. I’ll do that for the 50 different accounts that I am signed up for and have a password associated. Listen, I had trouble remembering all 50 states in elementary school, so I don’t think remembering 50 different complex passwords is in my repertoire. (more…)
